Domestic Violence Sexual Assault
You don't deserve to be abused. Remember, another person's violence is not your fault. If you need assistance, call 911 or 746-8026. We are waiting to hear from you.
What is domestic violence?
It is NOT a marital conflict, a little argument, a lover's quarrel or a private family matter!
What is domestic violence?
It is occurring when one person uses emotional, verbal, psychological, sexual or physical abuse to gain power and control over another person. Threatening and coercive behaviors are often used to manipulate and instill fear in
another individual. Without intervention, abuse will increase and may lead to a physical
violence, permanent injury and even death. Statistics show that once someone is hit by an abusive partner,
they will be hit again. For more information, please call 746-8026.
The Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Program at Alaska Family Services is the
only service provider of this nature in the Mat-Su Valley. The DVSA Program provides
domestic violence and sexual assault information, referrals and advocacy.

Back to top Legal Advocacy
Legal Advocacy is provided to victims of domestic violence or sexual assault. While this
is not the same as attorney services, the advocate is instrumental in helping victims know
their rights and work with and through the legal system. She helps with the preparation of
protective orders, explanations of the legal system and process, accompanies victims to
court proceedings and makes referrals to legal resources. In addition, the legal advocate
facilitates communication between the client and the district attorney' office, law
enforcement, the public defender and her attorney. The Legal Advocate in cooperation
with Alaska Legal Services, provides legal information workshops at AFS that are open
to the public on a bi-monthly basis.
Domestic Violence Support and Information groups are conducted regularly with the goal
of assisting women and children in overcoming the trauma of abuse and empowering
them to be safe. Groups provide an opportunity to reduce isolation and share and connect
with others who have much in common. This group is open to the public. For more
information about time and location, please call 746-8026.
Rape Crisis Advocates respond to Mat-Su Regional Health Center's Emergency Room, day or night,
when someone has been sexually assaulted. The advocates and volunteers are members
of a specially trained team known as the SART or Sexual Assault Response Team. These
advocates focus on the immediate and long-term needs of the victim and their families
and inform them of their rights. They work in collaboration with a Sexual Assault Nurse
Examiner and Law Enforcement if requested.
WRRAP
Women's Residential Reunification and Action Program provides residential
services for battered and abused women with chemical dependency issues. Women and
their children will reside in the safe shelter while receiving drug or alcohol treatment on
an outpatient basis with a local service provider. Case management services will assist
women in residence with their case plans and provide support and advocacy to maximize
the chances for a successful experience.
