Our Services

We provide services to families through intervention, referral, collaboration and education. All our programs utilize the Care Coordination Model, a “no wrong door” approach that functions through an elaborate system of screenings and referrals to insure clients receive timely and appropriate service.

Alcohol Safety Action Program

ASAP provides substance abuse screening, case management and accountability for DWI, DUI and other alcohol and drug-related misdemeanors. This involves screening cases referred from the district court and monitoring them throughout education and/or treatment requirements.

Behavioral Health Treatment Center

The Behavioral Health Treatment Center provides integrated behavioral health services, including psychiatric assessments, substance abuse counseling and individual, group and family counseling.

Child Care Assistance

The Child Care Assistance program is designed to help income-eligible families with the cost of child care while they are working and/or attending approved training or educational courses. It administers funding for childcare subsidies and facilitates the approval process for childcare providers. Visit www.threadalaska.org for help finding a child care provider or for information about provider training.

Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault

The Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault program provides an emergency shelter for women and their children escaping abusive situations. This 32-bed facility is the only nationally accredited shelter of its kind in Alaska. The DVSA program also offers services designed to help women heal and get their lives back on track, as well as outreach and advocacy aimed at preventing violence before it starts.

Family Support and Preservation

The Family Support and Preservation program offers parenting workshops, one-on-one guidance and in-home services designed to improve parenting skills and keep children safe. It also provides supervised visitations, in conjunction with the Office of Children’s Services.

Family Violence Intervention

The Family Violence Intervention program is a court-approved, state certified domestic violence intervention program for adult men and women. It offers counseling and anger management for adults, teens and children.

Residential Services

Alaska Family Services offers two residential programs for youth:

  • Dorothy Saxton Youth Shelter – This 12-bed co-ed facility provides emergency stabilization and behavioral rehabilitation services for youth ages 12-18. It operates in cooperation with the Office of Children’s Services and the Division of Juvenile Justice. For more information, call 376-7233.
  • ROSA House – This 8-bed facility provides 24-hour behavioral rehabilitation services and treatment for girls, ages 12-18, who experience severe emotional disturbances. It also offers specialized services for girls with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. ROSA House operates in cooperation with Alaska’s Bring the Kids Home Project, the Office of Children’s Services and the Division of Juvenile Justice. For more information, call 357-4108.

Tobacco Prevention & Control

This program provides community education about the dangers of tobacco use and secondhand smoke and promotes cessation through Alaska’s Tobacco Quit Line. It works in partnership with the Mat-Su Borough School District K-12 Tobacco Prevention and Control program and Breathe Free Mat-Su, a community coalition dedicated to eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke.

Women, Infants and Children (WIC)

WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that helps pregnant women, new mothers and young children eat well, learn about good nutrition and stay healthy. It provides monthly vouchers for healthy foods, nutrition counseling, health screenings and referrals, and breastfeeding support. Services are based on income eligibility.
