The Dorothy Saxton Youth Shelter
The Dorothy Saxton Youth Shelter is a Level 2, Emergency Stabilization and Assessment Center (ESA) that provides behavioral rehabilitation services (BRS) and temporary residential care for children ages 12-18 who are in immediate danger in their current environment, who need short term, temporary placement, or may need stabilization and assessment of their needs.
The Saxton Youth Shelter is named for long-time Alaskan Dorothy Saxton. Dorothy was Palmer Magistrate before and after Alaska Statehood. She helped many Mat-Su Valley youth turn their lives around. She considered young people who came before her to be worthy of a second chance - frequently giving them the options of joining the U.S. Navy or going to jail. Those who chose the Navy were, and still consider themselves to be, members of Dorothy's "Canoe Club". It is our wish to honor her and continue the good work she started.
The Saxton Youth Shelter is licensed by the State of Alaska, Department of Public Health as a Level II Residential Child Care Facility. It is supervised by a Master's Level case manager and staffed by certified child care providers.
