Legal Advocacy
Legal Advocacy is provided to victims of domestic violence or sexual assault. While this is not the same as attorney services, the advocate is instrumental in helping victims know their rights and work with and through the legal system. She helps with the preparation of protective orders, explanations of the legal system and process, accompanies victims to court proceedings and makes referrals to legal resources. In addition, the legal advocate facilitates communication between the client and the district attorney' office, law enforcement, the public defender and her attorney. The Legal Advocate in cooperation with Alaska Legal Services, provides legal information workshops at AFS that are open to the public on a bi-monthly basis.
Domestic Violence Support and Information groups are conducted regularly with the goal of assisting women and children in overcoming the trauma of abuse and empowering them to be safe. Groups provide an opportunity to reduce isolation and share and connect with others who have much in common. This group is open to the public. For more information about time and location, please call 746-8026.
Rape Crisis Advocates respond to Mat-Su Regional Health Center's Emergency Room, day or night, when someone has been sexually assaulted. The advocates and volunteers are members of a specially trained team known as the SART or Sexual Assault Response Team. These advocates focus on the immediate and long-term needs of the victim and their families and inform them of their rights. They work in collaboration with a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and Law Enforcement if requested.
