Training and Education Programs

Alaska Family Services is in the process of developing new education and training opportunities in a number of areas. Most of these are available locally at no cost. In addition, we offer a variety of groups that are open to the community. In some cases there are fees required. We are interested in collaborating with organizations and welcome your input. Alaska Family Services can provide education/training in the following areas:


Domestic Violence:
Victims:

  • Introduction to Domestic Violence

  • In Her Shoes/a simulation based on DV victims' expericence (Washington State Coalition against Domestic Violence)

Males:

  • Tough Guise: Violence, Media, and The Crisis in Masculinity- (Media Education Foundation DVD)
  • Manhood and Violence: Fatal Peril/Resolve to Stop the Violence Program (video & guided discussion)
  • Reaching Men: Stategies for Preventing Sexist Attitudes, Behaviors, and Violence - (Manual for presentations & action)
  • Toolkit on working with men and boys-
    (10 lesson plans on involving men in ending violence)
  • Gender Violence/Gender Justice - grades 7-12 (Multidisciplinary teaching guide)

Groups:

Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault:

  • Domestic Violence Support Group: free, open to community, may join at any time, women only.
  • Safe Kids Group: provided free of charge for children whose mothers are in the DV support group.

Family Violence Intervention:

  • Anger Management: co-ed, weekly, youth (ages 7-12), teens (13-17), adults, up to 12 weeks, sliding scale available.
  • Women's Alternative to Violence Group: weekly, open to community & court-mandated clients, 36 weeks, nominal fee or community work service in lieu of payment.
  • Batterers' Intervention Program: adult males only, weekly, open to community & court-mandated clients, 36 weeks, nominal fee or community work service in lieu of payment.

Family Support and Preservation/Parenting:

  • Parenting: Love and Logic Model, free, open to community, meets weekly.
